Baptized as sleeping hormone, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland (epiphysis) under the action of suprachiasmatic nuclei (NSC), small groups of neurons seat of our biological clock.

Influenced by the alternation of day and night, its secretion begins around 9 pm and reaches its maximum between 2 and 5 am. The first light of the dawn then inhibits its production, inducing the awakening.

Generally, the biological clock thus makes it possible to maintain 24 h sleep / sleep cycles synchronized with the alternation of day and night. However, this well-oiled mechanism can be disrupted (jet-lag, staggered work schedules, aging) and give rise to sleep disorders *.
